About charcoal

'Highlight is Chung-Hsi Han's exhibition room. An artist who is a magician with charcoal and crayon. His mystic landscapes let sizzle space'. (Marc van de Voort, zaterdag 14 jan 2017 Regiokrant artikel 'Landschappen laten Kruithuisruimtes zinderen' curator Jan Radersma)

About nomination Pictura

The title refers to an important role of water within the city: a place to dream, a place to meet. The jury's eyes were wandering to the playing of light and water, the study of wetland landscapes within the boundaries of the city. The atmosphere referring to Romantic Times: threatening, unruly, immeasurable. The atmospherical depth sometimes unheinlich and oppressive in combination with changes of perspectives resulting in great dynamics. This is even more emphasised by the daring way of presenting resulting in a work that remains existing (Hidde van Greuningen, chairman jury)

About 'Metamorphosis'

'His landscapes are wide and plain without any reference to human presence. Chung uses an eraser to suggest light. In first instance, the erased parts seem pleasantly tangible. However when looking closer it makes a diffuse and almost uncomfortable impression. For example as we look to Metamorphosis no. 9, small signes can be recognized like figures. Or are these animals? Looking nearby, the signs change into vague spots, leaving you behind puzzled. Where are we looking at, a wide landscape or a micro cosmos?' (Mieke Conijn, director Kunstenlab Deventer, 2013).

About 'Driving force'

'The force driving Chung's intuitive work is the power of nature. He first came into contact with nature when he worked from 1986 till 1991 as suspension bridge builder in Nepal....For days he walked along goat tracks from one construction location to the next. Spiritually and physically the expierience was so inspiring.... Only in the arts he felt he could explore the creative and the destructive power of nature...Under the complex skin of canvas as well as paper resides an urgent inner need. As Chung says, his work originates from a 'Black Source' simultaneously strong and mysterious.' (Hendrik van Leeuwen, writer and artist, 2005).
